Scholarships for Teaching Assistants in Special Education

 

The NSSED Foundation has established a Scholarship Program for Teaching Assistants who are employed either by NSSED or any of its member districts.

 

The Program awards up to five one-time $1,000 grants to Teaching Assistants who are pursuing either an undergraduate or graduate degree as well as endorsement programs in an area of Special Education or related field.

 

The deadline for a Teaching Assistant Scholarship is November 30, 2021.

Purpose The Scholarship Program for Teaching Assistants was established to support the professional development of educators committed to serving students with special needs. The purpose of the program is to provide financial assistance to Teaching Assistants in Special Education who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree or an endorsement program in an area of special education or a related field.

Up to five one-time $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually within the sole discretion of the Foundation.

Eligibility To be eligible to apply, an applicant must be:

1. A full-time Teaching Assistant employed by NSSED or any of its member districts and has been so employed for at least one school year prior to application;

and

2. Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school degree as well as endorsement programs in an area of special education or a related field.

Application The applicant must submit a completed application, as well as a written essay on what inspired the applicant to pursue his/her field of study. In addition, the applicant must submit either a transcript of grades from the educational institution in which he/she is enrolled, if the applicant has taken classes, or proof of enrollment if they have not; a letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator with whom the applicant has worked; and a list of any employment or activities in which he/she has been involved that serve children and/or families with disabilities.

Determination of Scholarship Award Upon receipt of the completed application, the Foundation will review the application and determine the Scholarship Awards based on, but not limited to, the goals and potential of the applicant in pursuing a degree in Special Education or a related field.

Scholarships will be awarded in December.

Payment of Scholarship Award Payment of the Scholarship shall be made to an award recipient upon presentation of a bill or fee statement from the institution where the recipient is attending. The Scholarship Award must be redeemed within two years from the date the Scholarship is awarded.
